“By the end I actually felt like a wheelchair rugby player”
“Wheelchair Rugby?
I had no idea what to expect!
I was met by a very happy and friendly Layth at the front door and he wheeled me into the arena and introduced me to the amazing Mick and Adam. Mick and Adam are a fabulous double act. Mick is an ex pro rugby player who is very warm and welcoming. Adam is also an ex rugby player and the current Newcastle Wheelchair Rugby 5’s Coach.
We all arrived and chatted in the arena and then we were directed to our chairs after a warm and happy intro and H&S talk. The wheelchairs were all lined up and ready, they were all labelled with everyone's names, a pair of new gloves (And they were needed), reversible playing vest, and a gift form one of the clubs sponsors, how cute.
The day just flew by, it was amazing fun, I cannot voice how fantastic it was. Mick and Adam took it in turns to hold different sessions to get us ready and understand the basics. Every exercise we did was fun, challenging and was clearly part of the plan to teach us the game quickly. What was amazing was that we were joined by Newcastle Wheelchair Rugby players (Kev, Sam, Layth, Jeff) in the drills and exercises. So we had players who were more experienced to help us learn the drills and tactics quickly, on top of Mick and Adams expert coaching.
Even though it was tiring and a proper physical workout, everyone in the team could participate fully and had an active role in the team to score, the ultimate aim of the day. The game at the end was amazing, we were split into two teams and we had Mick as coach and the other team had Adam. We had an hour of preparation before the game with our coaches to talk tactics and run through drills.
The game was so competitive, of course it was, but it was played with such a great spirit. The game ended in a draw, a perfect way to end a perfect day.
Our team was put together at the start of lockdown, so we had been working together for nearly 2 years only meeting on zoom, this was the perfect way to bond the team and we were still talking about the day weeks after and I still go back to watch the videos on the website.
By the end I actually felt like a wheelchair rugby player and I cannot recommend the day anymore than to say it was perfect, different, challenging, inclusive, and most of all amazing fun.“

What is Wheelchair Rugby
As one of the only full-contact disability sports, it is little wonder Wheelchair Rugby was one of the biggest hits of the London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. The sport is open to both men and women, and is one of the only games which allows them to compete on the same team.
Wheelchair Rugby Fours (Paralympic Discipline)
Wheelchair Rugby (AKA ‘Murderball’) is a team sport for athletes with a disability, it is played around the world and is a summer Paralympic sport. Wheelchair rugby is growing every year and in the UK there are several leagues played in two different wheelchair rugby codes, aimed at people with differing severity in disabilities.
WR5’s
GBWR (Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby) developed a new discipline of the game, Wheelchair Rugby 5s, which is aimed at those players with greater functionality than the Paralympic discipline permits. This new discipline has been well-received, with new teams developing across the country and it currently has 3 leagues: Premiership, Championship and 1st Division. The North East Barbarians compete in the Championship, finishing third in 2021.
What Are The Rules Of Wheelchair Rugby 5s
All Profits Used To Promote Wheelchair Sport
Is This For Profit Or To Raise Cash For The Team?
All profits from the corporate team building days are retained within the clubs CIC (Community Interest Company). A CIC is similar to a limited company with one major difference, all assets and profits must remain within the club's CIC. So, its yes to both, we will make a profit from the team building events to raise cash to support the team and promote wheelchair sport.
Employ Wheelchair Users
This will allow us to employ the best talent and companies to help deliver a fantastic corporate team building day. While also employing the clubs playing team members to host these days and create meaningful employment to them. With the help of corporate businesses and the profits from the team building days we will be able to grow the club to be the largest wheelchair club in Europe.
How Much Does It Cost To Run A Wheelchair Rugby Club?
The club at present is growing and we have annual costs of £15,000 and player subscription income of £3,000, a large shortfall which at present we fill with corporate sponsorship and grants. The profits from the corporate team building days allows us to earn our annual club shortfall, rather than relying heavily on grants and subsidies. One of our biggest capital expenditures is wheelchairs, they are around £5,000 to buy with 4 wheels. The club in 2 years has raised the funds to buy 12 wheelchairs, however, we have more players than wheelchairs. Your company could help to promote wheelchair sport in the north east by buying the club a wheelchair - check out our corporate sponsorship packages.
What's Included In The Day?
When the team arrives everything is included, food, drinks, wheelchairs, gloves, team vests, snacks and a delicious team lunch. Trophies and presentations, plus the day will be captured in photos and videos so that you and your team can go back to the day and chat over the water fountain (or should it be zoom now) and the day for weeks, months and years after.
Have a fabulous day team building and also help promote wheelchair sport.
